About Giesla

The fun facts:

1. I love antique advertising and artifacts. I have almost bought letters from old marquees or giant signage letters more times than I can count. If the giant letter I debated over buying had been “G” and not “O”, you’d better believe that it’d be in my apartment.

2. If it has a face and it’s something that doesn’t usually have a face, I will buy it or really want it. There’s a sticker set that allows you to anthropomorphize anything, like your stapler, by putting eyes and a mouth on it. Yes, it would be like living in Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Yes, it would rule.

3. My hair has been blue, purple, orange and multiple shades of red. It’s currently brown. And boring. This will change.

4. I have a tendency to get distrac ….ooh….is that sparkly? Lemme see!

5. Lime green = good. Just ask my wardrobe.

The fancy statement, complete in the third person (though I wrote it myself):

Giesla Hoelscher is a visual digital artist from Saint Paul, MN with a background in graphic design.  An Adobe Photoshop user for over 14 years, she fuses her computer talents with her admiration of traditional collage.

Having a love and respect for Minnesota’s historic landmarks, popular establishments and events, she produces her main body of collage work by layering and blending original photographs using digital techniques. She is currently working to include other locations outside of Minnesota.

As she grows as an artist, she is expanding upon the commercial look of the location collages and exploring her interests in mixed media and retro/vintage artwork and objects. In the new work she uses found image and items, stock and original photographs, handwriting and illustrations. She is currently employing mixed media techniques such as stamping, painting and other paper altering methods to add interest to some of the collages after they are printed.

The real mccoy:

I started creating my collages because I love taking pictures and I love learning about why a place is popular or how long a building has been there. I take all of the photos that I use in the collages myself, which is definitely time consuming, but a labor of love. A place’s history is exciting to me along with the stories that go with it. Nothing makes me smile more than when you tell me you’re buying a collage because you got engaged at one of the bars or that your family has had a long running tradition of traveling to a particular area. I learn so much from my customers & I hope I can teach them something new, too. My art is a fusion of my story and your story and that’s what makes it so cool for me. It’s about connecting.
